[personal profile] monado and I have found each other.

This means collaboration and changes! The biggest being PLOT and LOCATION. Stay tuned!

Yeah sorry, I'm just happy to find someone else looking to start an original pokemon game too. ahhasjhadjhdsa /flails more
meruberri: (Disney // Eilonwy ; just missed)
It's been a week. Where have I been?

I've had a lot to think about and it's kind of important to let things sink in so I don't get too overwhelmed. I think I was moving too fast before.

Also confession: I've never ran a game before. I run a blog and I've helped out in an LJRP with apps and updating. So I've been poking around for comods. But I don't know anyone who's interested.

And because I could use all the help I could get I've been looking through other Pokemon games to see how they do things

And so I've nothing new to say other than I appreciate every comment and do take everything into account even if I don't respond.
meruberri: (Fragile // Seto ; ah there's one now!)
This is going to be really scattered because I don't have a set topic to ramble on about this time.

FIRST location.
I... really want to use Unova. The more I think about it the more I come back to it. It's the region that has everything! Except a mall and a game counter and separate pokemarts and pokecenters... BUT OTHER THAN THAT! Of course that will mean you get Gen V pokemon. HOWEVER I have been developing ideas on how to get you your precious pikachu.

• Swarm events. Freak weather conditions can send flying-types off course enough to appear in Unova for a limited time only.
• Similarly ocean dwelling pokemon may appear off the coasts
• Not every character HAS to be native to Unova. Why not bring a pokemon or two with you on the long journey from home? (which means I'll have to impose a limit of these guys. I'll probably just not allow them for a couple app rounds)
• Traveling NPCs may be willing to make a trade
• Magikarp salesman.

Things are in the hands of the breeders after that to find compatible pokemon, produce eggs and trade to the trainers who want them.

SECOND random wild encounters and capturing.
This is something again left in the individual player's hands. Set a pace consistent with a) the rest of the game and b) what the character can handle unless your intent is to white out. However a few rules.
• Shiny, legendary, otherwise special or extremely rare pokemon are not be encountered without an event or modly permission.
• There must be some record of every capture on the comms. Play it out or call a friend to brag about it or whatever. It's just if there is no way of telling where and when your lillipup came from you might as well have have just cheated. This will add some level of skill? work? and prevent anyone from magically having the type they need to win.
---possible drawback: may discourage dex completion.
• Still not sure about catching fainted pokemon. I've always wondered why not so I'm tempted to say it's okay but I'm worried about diverging too much from the games.

THIRD gym battles
• there's going to have to be a sign up for at least as long as their run by npcs it would look something like this:

• you may only challenge one gym once per day
• likewise a gym can only be challenged once a day because the leader's pokemon need rest and care too

FOURTH more than just "life"?
I don't anticipate much of an overall plot other than what players and characters decide for themselves although I am working on coming up with events and things to help shake things up a bit.
• there could be some quests to earn a little extra money
• I do like the idea of establishing some kind of Pokemon fair. Perfect opportunity for breeders to show off their precious babbys to characters who would otherwise not see them. And lots of trades.
• I'll set up an events posts on the mod journal so players can propose ideas even if they can't run it themselves.

FIFTH I think I should talk about breeding some
• breeders are the only ones who can produce eggs
• their role is much like farming and they probably don't move around much since they have all the pokemon and eggs to take care of.
• Again set a reasonable pace for how often eggs turn up and hatch.
• hatching will work the same way as in the game so start wondering
• Hatching a shiny is something that isn't to be done without permission or an event
• however hatching a 10% gender won't need permission just realistic frustration

SIXTH joining the bad guys
• yes, but I need some more time to think about how to handle this

Um, I think that's about all I have at the moment.
The next thing on my mind is tables, codes, and organization. /sob
meruberri: (Disney // Ariel ; thinking is hard)
Ok so leveling. This got rather mathy, sorry it's just the only way I know how to express my thinking.

Let's assume that a wild encounter is worth 1exp each
and a trainer's is worth 2exp each to preserve that element in the games

Assuming for a pokemon to reach X level it must earn 2X exp.
So to reach LV2 it needs 4exp -+-> 6exp to reach LV3
(1+2+3+...+100)2 will give the exp needed to max out

It comes out to 5,050 - 10,100 battles.

THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE KEPT TRACK OF. Since I don't think doing this math everyday is going to be all that fun and considering all this is likely to get handwaved more often than not, I want to leave it mainly in the hands of the player and trust that they can match the pace of the game and not become the very best like no one ever was on day 2. Which wouldn't work out very well for ya without the necessary badges. With this I'm just trying to provide a guideline of some sort to keep pokemon from growing too fast.

Using that equation as a guideline it becomes clear that the higher the level the slower its growth (which is obvious if you play the games.) How I see it is, assuming that your starting at LV1 it could start growing at a rate of 3 levels a day. By LV10 I don't think more than 2 levels a day is plausible... then I wanna say at about LV25 you'd be looking at 1 level a day. In the games that would be nothing but in a real life setting I think that would be overworking the poor thing not to mention the all the fainted 'mon you left scattered about. After a certain point like ~LV50ish it will likely take more than a day to level up.
*this all assumes that you have nothing better to do with your time than train all day every day

Stats. Ya know... I had a lot of stuff written out and it was starting to look like table top characters sheets or something. But it just made me go .-.a "who cares? to what benefit is this?"
In the end I just hit the backspace and said "We know our pokemon and if not there are wikis for this." Yep.

As for battles I think we'll subscribe to the shows school of fighting and move learning. Meaning you will have to work with your pokemon through specialized training to learn and master each new move. It builds a closer bond between poke and trainer. For simple things like training your Spearow to kick dust and peak at the foe should only take a day or two (maybe more if your really incompetent) but for the higher level things it should take longer to pull it off.

TMs and HMs aren't magic free move machines either. They're just specialized training instructions/video tutorial to make teach and learning the move it contains possible. So yes it will still take work and time.

On the bright side you'll never have to give up a move once it's learned. Yay for infinite move slots! Or rather the move slots match up with available moves.

-> Which brings me to noting that there is some wiggle room on everything mentioned. Every pokemon is a unique and special snowflake and will respond to things differently. Evolution may not take place on exactly for the same level for every two otherwise identical pokemon. As the anime has shown us that a pokemon's own feelings about evolving do play a part.

I'm trying to allow players the freedom to give their pokemon partners as much personality as they want.

For PvP battles that's completely up to the players involved how they want to handle it. Communication is key and it would probably be beneficial to talk it out before hand.

... does all this make sense? I'm so tired.

QUESTIONS WHILE WRITING THIS
1) Gym battles, rules and how they work. At least while it's in mod hands
2) Oops it fainted vs Alright it fainted ...can I catch it?
3) Finding and capturing wild pokemon rules/guidelines
meruberri: (Pokemon // Ralts ; ...some quiet thinkin)
A slice of life Pokemon game... just like in the games. My goal is to create a lax environment that will allow for anything to happen!

It will be: Player driven. Comm based (journal add/removes are annoying to me)
I snagged [personal profile] pokemonprof to use as a mod journal.

In the begging only trainers and possibly breeder slots will be open, gym leaders/nurse/officer/etc will all be npcs until the game gets going at which point more character classes will open - not that you'd be locked into which ever you choose forever. So yeah if you really really want to put in the effort for it your little newb trainer could become champion and join the elite 4 or join a gym and eventually become the leader. Or he could drop out of the training game because it's haaaard and manage a store. IDC life is crazy and full of infinite possibilities!

Back on topic your starting character does not have to be a starting trainer. That would flood the game with 12-16 year olds right at the start. Although I do anticipate this age group will be the most represented. HOWEVER a starting trainer can be any age 12-92.

Each player is in charge of playing their own pokemon so no poke-chars sorry. This means that you can only have as many pokemon as you can handle. Like in the games you can only have 6 with you at a time. Since each pokemon has a personality even if they can be rather flat this is something that needs to be kept track of.

I'll have to code a table for this just so everything can look nice.
And for the PC box.
And trainer cards?

Interaction would be predominantly face-to-face. Characters can call each other on a poke-gear type device but they'd had to have exchanged numbers first.
There will be a comm for this. And would look something like...
Youngster Joey ==> Silver
My Rattata is looking AWESOME!

QUESTIONS
• Which region should it be set in? I'm partial to the feel of Unova although I think the small town feel of the previous games would be better suited.
• OR should I create a new region? This would take much more work as I'd have to create a map and bio for every location and determine everything from scratch.
• How to handle day/night and seasons
• Growth of a pokemon... how does leveling work?
